Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry (1-credit Mini Course)

  • Blackboard Course Web Site (Spring, 2003)

  • Course Abstract
This one-credit mini-course is designed for graduate students who are working in any area of Life Sciences and who have no prior experience in mass spectrometry. The goals of the course include giving the student an introduction to state-of-the-art techniques and approaches in biological mass spectrometry and an exploration of how mass spectrometry is aiding the understanding of molecular biochemistry. The course will be team taught by John Hempel (BioSci), Kasi Somayajula (Chemistry) and Joe Grabowski (Chemistry). The course will be taught twice a week, 75-minutes per meeting, for six consecutive weeks; the twelve meeting periods will each be devoted to a different, current topic. Grading will be based on a combination of class participation, problem sets, and a final examination. Students interested in traditional EI/CI and fragmentation mass spectrometry for small-molecule proof-of-structure are directed towards the “Techniques of Organic Research” course, Chem 1380/2380.
