Teaching Chemistry in the Computer Era (1-credit Mini Course)

  • captured from the Blackboard Course Web Site

  • Course Abstract
(Profs. Grabowski and Bandik; Mini-course; 1 credit)
The advent of inexpensive personal computers and the world wide web has presented new paradigms for the teaching of science courses at the college and university level. In addition to discussing the hardware and software used achieve this new method of learning, the course will explore the pedagogical issues of these new tools as well as traditional Instructional Design concerns. The course will meet for ten Wednesday evenings for 75-minutes,and will feature presentations by invited experts, discussions of good and bad existing projects, and an examination of relevant literature. This one-credit mini-course will emphasize the practical and will require each enrolled student to evaluate and present (poster format) a electronic-based learning assessment or learning activity (or a related series of such) for a topic (or series of topics) relevant to one of the Chemistry Department courses. Students interested in an academic career may find this a particularly appealing mini-course. Course enrollment will be limited to 12 students. Grading is based on the completed project and overall participation.
