12 Nov 01: Click here for a picture of the (mostly) renovated CSC-12.
1 Nov 01: It would be nice to have a way to clean erasers before each lecture, and perhaps even during lecture. So we went looking, and found this:
28 Sep 01: Update on blackboards!
Subject: Rumors
I have no official news about the blackboards. I do know that many of us
are anxiously awaiting them. I have heard through the rumor mill that
there are severe problems with the motors and that no solution is in sight at the
moment. The rumors go so far as to say everything might be
shipped back! As ever, I'll post more official news if/when I hear
anything..
14 Sep 01: Update on blackboards!
Subject: unforseen
Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 11:41:08 -0500
From: Patty <PATTY@chemlan.chem.pitt.edu>
I hate to have to give you this news, but an unforseen problem has come up in regard to the blackboards.
The problem can be solved, but the contractor will not be able to start installing the blackboards
until next Monday, 9/17. They should be finished with the installation by the end of next week.
13 Sep 01: Update on blackboards!
Subject: arrived
Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 14:28:56 -0500
From: Patty <PATTY@chemlan.chem.pitt.edu>
FYI: The blackboards have arrived. They are presently sitting outside the lecture halls in the Ashe lobby.
The contractor will be installing them tonight and tomorrow night. Provided the contractor does not run
into any unforseen problems, the boards will be ready for classes on Monday, 9/17.

We will install overhead projectors in all three rooms by the end of the day Friday. The screens are installed but the controls did not work as of this morning. The contactor promised that they will be fully functional by Friday. I'll check to be sure on Friday. If they are not, we will install portable screens. We are entering the orders for the MWF 10 - 11am class. I don't see any reason why we won't be able to deliver a data projector and cables for all of such classes. If you hear from any of your colleagues who need data display, please have them contact me ASAP as our schedule is filling up quickly. |
22 Aug 01: Note, the minutes from the 8/21/01 meeting are updated periodically as additional info is acquired!
22 Aug 01: E-mail query sent regarding the "missing row of chairs":
|
Can you check with the contractors/architects: It looks like they have left out the front most "row" of seats in each hall. Did they modify our design on purpose? In other words, CSC-12, for example, needs three more sets of 5 chairs, one in each column.Could you just see if they are going to install those or if not, might we be able to change their mind? The MS-Word version of our Recommendations report, lower down on this web site, shows what we requested. |

20 Aug 01: Some news, via e-mail, regarding the tablet writing area.
Re: tablet arm area |
|
|
Svelte specimens [of humanity] may be able to fit behind larger tablet arms, but the average build has trouble with them. The registrars office has had MANY complaints from students not so svelte that have classes in the main lecture rooms in Thaw. The newest renovation in Thaw Hall uses a mix of both the larger and smaller tablets arms. Our tiers are smaller than the Thaw Hall tiers, thus leaving only 9, vs the 15 inches in Thaw, for a person to squeeze past a row of students already seated code supposedly requires12inches. (See Pictures posted on 20 Aug 01 for a comparison of tablet areas between Thaw Hall and the new seats in Chevron.) |
17 Aug 01: Some news, via e-mail regarding the height of the movable demo benches and the tablet writing area.
Re: Response to the two issues circulating about auditoriums: |
|
|
There are "kits" for the moveable benches that still need to be attached to raise height to stationary height(36"). |
|
|
I am searching for variances to code regulation about spacing between tiers of seating requiring smaller tablet arms. Will let you know if I can find anything. |
15 Aug 01: Some concerns, via e-mail, regarding the tablet writing area.
[We] cannot measure our old tablets, as they are gone, but Thaw 102 & 104 measure in at 11.5x16.5=189.75 sq in, while the new ones are 10x13.75=137.5 sq in, and much more rounded on the unattached side. This is a 38%+ difference in writing area; note also that the Thaw tablets are deep enough to support an 8.5x11 sheet. |

30 April 01: 3D
in the Classroom at IUB
21 April 01: KJ found some web sites related to "stereo
projection issues"; the one in bold describes the method that we agreed was
likely the best and it also demonstrates that the "splitter" is
commercially available. http://www.ziplink.net/~3dman/,
http://www.curtin.edu.au/curtin/centre/cmst/publicat/korea00.pdf,
http://www.stereo3d.com/news.htm,
http://www.vrex.com/, http://www.cyviz.com/produkt.html,

http://www.soe.ecu.edu/vr/vrits/1-4talkm.htm,
20 April 01: C.S., K.J. & J.J.G. met with Ed Gyurisin to discuss "stereo projection" issues. Several alternatives were discussed (red/blue glasses; passive polarization, and active glasses). The sense of the group was that much more information is needed (EG will attend a national conference in June; CS and KJ will forward EG info that they collect) but that passive polarization using two projectors might be the most feasible. Info sources that need to be checked include: Barco (maker of projectors); New York City Science Museum, Univ or Illinois (presenter at recent ACS San Diego meeting), etc. At least one of these techniques will require a "silvered screen" such that the polarization is not lost - can we paint the wall with an equivalent paint? The sense of the meeting also was to put a stereo projection system in 12B initially and normal projection capabilities in 12 and 12A (for now) until we have demonstrated the reliability and utility of the approach adopted.
20 April 01: At the same meeting as above, EG noted that CIDDE
was exploring the possibility of installing touch sensitive monitor screens in
our Lecturer's Desk instead of the LCD monitors currently planned. If this
works, all three lecture halls will have the same technology. This change
does suggest that the "monitor housing" in the designed lecturer's
bench be changed to a more gentle angle than currently designed.
E-Mail, 7 April 01: Lecture Hall Renovation Comments (in pdf format; after the 4/6/01 meeting).
5 April 01: Expectations are that all three lecture halls will be
undergoing renovation from May 9th till the start of the Fall semester; anyone
needing a lecture hall during that time period should anticipate that these
three lectures will NOT be available. There is still a great deal of
uncertainty as to when the new chairs will be installed (summer or over
Christmas).
5 April 01: Here is the e-mail from the Rich
Saliga, Facilities Management, about the status of the renovation project:
"The project is out to bids, the construction is to start May 1, 2001 and be
done for the fall term. The bids are due back March 14 [I presume
he means April 14; JJG]. The lab demonstration benches and the Lecture benches were implemented into the
project as per what was received from Dr. Grabowski. There will be a wet bench and Lecture bench in each Lecture Hall with a portable on wheels as
requested. As for the A/V you may want to ask Ed Gyurisin because we received the information he had and incorporated them into the project. New
seats were ordered, the number of seats in Halls 12A and 12B are 130 each.
In Hall 12 the number of seats are 280."
5 April 01: Ed Gyurisin, from CIDDE is slated to meet with us on Friday, 6
April, at 2:00, to discuss aspects of this project and to review the architect's
drawings for it.
24 March 01: While I have no "official notification" yet, I'm
going to "predict" that the physical renovations and the technology
improvements in the three lecture halls will NOT be completed by the start of
the Fall, 2001 semester. Why? 1. The project got off to a very
late start; mid-February rather than mid-November like CIDDE normally
prefers. (No, I don't know why.) 2. The current prediction is
that the number of new arm chairs we need for the three halls will not be
available to complete the physical renovations by the end of the summer.
3. The technology improvements do not start until AFTER the physical
renovations are done - the physical renovations, AT BEST, won't be done until
just prior to the start of the Fall 2001 semester (excepting chairs, note 2
above). Just thought I'd post this to be sure expectations don't exceed
reality. I'll try to post updates when I receive reliable information.
