The PMSDG Committee met in emergency session to discuss alternative plans due to a postponement of manufacturers night.
Manufacturers Night was postponed from November until April because of a conflict with Eastern Analytical Symposium. All manufacturers would be in NJ during the originally scheduled time.
The committee decided that Manufacturers Night would be held sometime during the first three weeks of April so as not to conflict with Pittcon, ASMS, or University Final Exams. Mark would revisit Mike Ramsey as the speaker, while Christina would continue to pursue people at NASA as an alternative.
Mark Bier suggested utilizing the Environmental Subgroup of the ACS to help with a short course on Chemistry of Streams/Rivers/Lakes. His brother would be willing to discuss effects of environmental pollutants on wildlife. We would also get 2-3 other speakers on the subject perhaps Ron Hites. It was decided, however that there is not enough time to get this together, so we will schedule it for the spring.
Kasi suggested a short course on sample preparation for environmental MS.
Manny suggested a mini-forum of local speakers. It was decided to investigate this possibility for a program following ASMS.
Mark suggested Andy Amoscato from Pitt to speak on his recent cancer paper. It was decided that this would be our backup for Nov 16 or Nov 17.
Another suggestion was a seminar on Olympic Drug Testing. This would be a great topic for manufacturers night as a backup.
It was decided to go forward with the environmental short course. Kasi was to contact William Budee at the EPA, while Ross was to contact Joe Levy at Ferro Corporation. Ken would contact a local person, from perhaps Microseeps, to speak on sample preparation.
The short course would be held on either Tuesday November 16th or Wednesday November 17th at either CMU or the University Club. A social would be at 1:00-1:30 PM followed by three speakers, with short breaks between speakers if necessary. The program would end at about 4:00 PM.
Ross also suggested that we involve the group in a Local History of Mass Spec.
Thank you all for the assistance on such short notice.
Respectfully Submitted,
Kenneth J. Rosnack
